Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
The education of our children is a sacred trust. Each generation of Catholics is called to pass on the light of Christ to the next generation.
In the next few weeks your parish will participate in a statewide effort to improve the educational opportunities of all children, no matter where they attend school. The Children’s Educational Initiative will help our children in three ways:
Provide scholarships for children to attend non-public schools, including Catholic Schools; Offer funds to public schools to bolster the academic programs they offer to children; and, enhance special education for children with disabilities.
This Initiative will not raise taxes on any taxpayer; instead, it offers a state income tax credit for those who donate to education foundations. If a person gives $1,000, he or she can claim a $500 tax credit. This will reduce their state tax bill by $500. In this way the Initiative will boost charitable giving that will help all our children.
The Children’s Education Initiative will help existing foundations (note your diocesan scholarship foundation) and encourage local communities to form new foundations. In this way the Initiative will foster local partnerships among public and non-public schools that help all children in the community.
In order for the Children’s Education Initiative to become a reality, Missouri voters will need to approve an amendment to our state constitution. A petition is now being circulated. If enough voters sign the petition, the initiative will be on the November 2014 election ballot.
While Churches may not endorse or oppose candidates for political office, they may participate in issue-related legislation and initiatives. As your Bishop, I ask you to join me in supporting this critical effort to help our children.
Let us work together to help all our school families and all our Catholic children, no matter where they attend school. Through the Children’s Education Initiative we can offer our children the precious gift of a quality education. Thank you and God Bless!
In Christ and Mary,
Most Reverend Robert W. Finn, Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph
