I recently received a letter from Bishop Finn reminding me (and you) that “this October (5th-19th) bishops from around the world will meet in Rome for an Extraordinary Synod on the family. Pope Francis has asked the entire Church join him in prayer for the Synod on Sunday, September 28th. Additionally, Bishop Finn asks you to answer this call to prayer for the needs of the approximately 150 Synod Fathers who will meet to discuss the “pastoral challenges of the family in the context of evangelization.” On Tuesday, October 7th, (the feast of the Holy Rosary) families are encouraged to pray the rosary for the needs of families and for the Synod on the Family. As we approach that day we will have reminders and more information in the bulletin.
We have also been asked to remind you about the Missouri Catholic Conference Annual Assembly on Saturday, Oct. 4th at the Missouri Capital. The theme for this assembly is “Marriage and Family at the crossroads.” The day begins at 10 a.m. and concludes with mass at 3:15 P.M. After a keynote address workshops are offered. There is also a “Youth Schedule” for 6th grade and up. If you are interested you can register at MOcatholic.org. There are a few brochures in the narthex.
You will also notice in the narthex information about Catholic young adult ministry in the Kansas City Metro area. This is their mission statement: “Empowering young adults to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ and His Church. Through evangelization & formation, we strive to ignite a fire for a lifetime of devoted discipleship.” If you are interested you can check them out online at KansasCityonaHil.org.
The diocese is also sponsoring a Date Night for catholic married couples. This “Date Night” will be held on the First Thursdays of the month @6:30-7:30 pm at Grand Street Café (4740 Grand, KCMO). “We start your date: drinks, appetizers, & a brief talk on Faith, Marriage, & Family. Then we send you away, &…You finish your date: at home or out on the town!
I hope you have marked your calendars for a Parish Mission offered by the three Catholic parishes in Lee’s Summit on Sunday, Nov. 16th and Monday Nov. 17th. The Mission will begin at 7:00 p.m. each evening and will be held at Our Lady of the Presentation Church.
This weekend we celebrate the Exaltation of the Cross. In her reflection in Celebration Patricia Sanchez writes, “As 21st-century believers, we are to be mindful that the cross is more than a piece of jewelry or part of the décor of our homes and churches. The cross witnesses to and demands of us a faithful following of Jesus that will, if our discipleship is authentic, put us at odds with a culture that negates Gospel values. Each time we look upon and venerate the cross; each time we cross ourselves in the name of the Father, Son and Spirit, we profess our willingness to take Jesus seriously; to live the radical Gospel fully; and to die for our beliefs, our values and commitment to God, to Jesus and one another.”
